Despite missing their starting power (Ty Ellis was at CCA finals…which he won so a big congratulations for that!), the boys managed to pull of an impressive finish. They had a slow start, close games, but they were struggling with a new system and a stressed coach (new baby and relative in the hospital). I spoke with my Grade 12's and let them know that I needed them to step up and be leaders because I was struggling to find the positive energy the team needed. I am so proud of what they did next. Team emails, texts, and inspiring speeches followed. The next day, they were a different team. My captains were leading by example and before I knew it, we were competing for the bronze medal. They made it their own their own….they willed themselves to make it to that point and as a coach I have never been prouder of a group of athletes. The came out strong and had no trouble beating Medstead in the first set. I think, however, they simply ran out of steam and lost the next two by only a few points. It was a great game and a great finish to the season.
Badminton season came next. We're not really known for our badminton…plus we had a dud of a coach. Mr. Olchowski was kind enough to volunteer his services, and of course I'm kidding about him being a dud. Scratch that, he bailed on them in playoffs and took off to Montreal. Everyone played hard - Leoville played harder. In the end, our mixed doubles team (Tell and Chyanne) made it through to regionals. Sadly, they couldn't attend,
We had a whole bunch of other athletic stuff happen, but I am only one person. As I mentioned Ty Ellis won CCA bullriding - a huge accomplishment. Katie Serienkho won some big swimming competitions (I'm told also a pretty big accomplishment) and also did well with her 4H cattle showings. Carter Amson made the Saskatoon AAA Blazers and has been drafted by the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Ryan Rothenberger attended the PA Mintos camp but I am not sure how it went. Chad Bernier and Reegan Johnston won the Senior league (playing for Maymont), playing against Radisson, who coincidentally, John McIntosh played for. Derek and Brock Clayton played on a provincial ball team this past summer but I do not know much about it. Justin Gillat attended Nationals (volleyball) while playing for Battleford Ballistics.
I apologize to the junior teams - I know the coverage of your teams is lacking. I also apologize to anyone I missed. I am going to get the coaches of other teams to contribute to this blog in hopes to provide more coverage of everything athletic that is happening in our school.
