Senior Girls Home Tourney

The Senior Girls just had their home tournament.  They did well - placed second.  Medstead took home the gold yet again.  Coach Nickell said she was extremely proud of the way the girls played.  The girls were able to mount a huge comeback agains Hafford in the semi-final.  The game was in the 3rd set and the girls were down 18-24.  Amazingly they came back and won it!  Good job girls.  Here is some video of the tournament courtesy of Caitlyn Gray.

Soccer Stars

Our soccer team has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Sure we have taken some beatings (ie: from Cando who has been playing soccer a long time and we are still not sure why they are in the 7v7 league. It would be kind of like the Edmonton Oilers playing in our Senior hockey league). Anyways, Cando aside…the teams that do belong in the 7v7 leagues are all fairly evenly matched and we have had some close and exciting games. We travelled to Rosthern and won - Kelsie Fouhy almost scored Maymont's first ever goal scored by a female. However, no finish. Kind of like this:

Just this weekend we travelled to Rosthern yet again and got second.  We beat Rosthern and Lanigan and lost to Cando.  The team is playing really well and starting to understand the game on a whole different level.  We are off to Dundurn tomorrow for a game against Hanley.

Mega Volley

The Senior Girls attended Mega Volley last weekend. They had a fairly solid weekend for their first tournament. Coach Nickell said she was impressed with the team chemistry and effort. She said they will continue to work on playing with positive energy and quicker court movement. The girls lost out in quarter finals on the championship side with a better than .500 average. Here is some video from the from the weekend.

Scoring Title

The elusive soccer scoring title is in grasp of a few. So far, it's a 3 way tie between Ty, John, and Chad. They have each bagged one goal. There is a game today against Cando - if anyone scores it will impressive and the scoring title may get a little more complicated. Kaitlyn and Kelsie had a breakaway and a chance at being in the running, but did not finish. Brock is not in the running, neither is Derek, or Beau.

Senior Boys: 2A Provincials 2010

Soccer

Our senior soccer has started once again.  We have already played two games.  Our first game was against Poundmaker and we suffered a 12-1 pounding.   The next day we regained our composure and travelled to Rosthern to take them on.  The game was close (we were leading 1-0 most of the game) but we ended up losing 3-2.  The team is confident that with Reegan Johnston back on the pitch (he has been busy with harvest) we will be able to beat them.

I am also excited to announce that we have started a junior soccer program.  There is a huge interest in the sport within our school (22 students at senior level and 22 students at junior).  Mr. Lockwood has volunteered to coach the junior team (a big thank you to him - he's already coaching Junior Boys volleyball so we definitely appreciate the time he is donating).  No schedule so far but it looks like we are going to try to have practices and games on Mondays.

Wrap Up

Last post November 1st, 2010?  Really?  Well, lots has happened since then.  The Senior Girls suffered a disappointing loss at Conferences.  Had they made it through the first round there is a good chance they would have made it all the way to provincials.  But, although losing sucks, a great athlete and team learns from those experiences and grows as a result.  The girls look strong this year, and after a slow start they seem to have a wonderful team chemistry happening.  Coach (Mrs) Nickell is impressed with the determination and work ethic they are bringing to practices.  The girls are looking ahead to this coming weekend, Mega Volley in Maidstone.  The girls play their first game at 4:00 p.m.

Despite missing their starting power (Ty Ellis was at CCA finals…which he won so a big congratulations for that!), the boys managed to pull of an impressive finish.  They had a slow start, close games, but they were struggling with a new system and a stressed coach (new baby and relative in the hospital).  I spoke with my Grade 12's and let them know that I needed them to step up and be leaders because I was struggling to find the positive energy the team needed.  I am so proud of what they did next.  Team emails, texts, and inspiring speeches followed.  The next day, they were a different team.  My captains were leading by example and before I knew it, we were competing for the bronze medal.  They made it their own their own….they willed themselves to make it to that point and as a coach I have never been prouder of a group of athletes.  The came out strong and had no trouble beating Medstead in the first set.  I think, however, they simply ran out of steam and lost the next two by only a few points.  It was a great game and a great finish to the season.

Badminton season came next.  We're not really known for our badminton…plus we had a dud of a coach.  Mr. Olchowski was kind enough to volunteer his services, and of course I'm kidding about him being a dud.  Scratch that, he bailed on them in playoffs and took off to Montreal.  Everyone played hard - Leoville played harder.  In the end, our mixed doubles team (Tell and Chyanne) made it through to regionals.  Sadly, they couldn't attend,

We had a whole bunch of other athletic stuff happen, but I am only one person.  As I mentioned Ty Ellis won CCA bullriding - a huge accomplishment.  Katie Serienkho won some big swimming competitions (I'm told also a pretty big accomplishment) and also did well with her 4H cattle showings.  Carter Amson  made the Saskatoon AAA Blazers and has been drafted by the Lethbridge Hurricanes.  Ryan Rothenberger attended the PA Mintos camp but I am not sure how it went.  Chad Bernier and Reegan Johnston won the Senior league (playing for Maymont), playing against Radisson, who coincidentally, John McIntosh played for.  Derek and Brock Clayton played on a provincial ball team this past summer but I do not know much about it.  Justin Gillat attended Nationals (volleyball) while playing for Battleford Ballistics.

I apologize to the junior teams - I know the coverage of your teams is lacking.  I also apologize to anyone I missed.  I am going to get the coaches of other teams to contribute to this blog in hopes to provide more coverage of everything athletic that is happening in our school.
